AWESOME Saturday!
WOW! Yesterday was exciting!!! Bought myself a road bike, like FINALLY! And went to catch the FIRST EVER Singapore Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony!! The day started off with a message from coach informing me of the bike sale happening at Commonwealth.. Then after breakfast and much persuasion of asking my mum and dad to give me a ride, we set off!! Kinda got lost as we did not know the exact location, but with the trusty Singapore road directions book, we found our way!!!
So much testing and discussion with coach has resulted in me buying a Polygon 300!!! Coach was really awesome to make her way down, and help me to asses if things were right, what else i needed, help me with a mutual swap of handle bar and more!! So i am only able to collect my bike next Saturday, where i can start to cycle and train for Desaru Sprint Race!! WHOAH!!
Then in the evening, my parents and I went to the Marina Bay Floating Platform to catch the Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.. I have to say, it is really awesome.. The security clearance, the volunteers, the ushers, the performance, practically it is all who was involved in this opening ceremony did an awesome job... KUDOS to ALL of you!!! On the other hand, i managed to see the SUPER ugly side of Singaporeans..
I have always been proud to call myself a Singaporean.. But with these ugly side of us, it puts me to shame sometimes.. We were all given a goodie bag (just like NDP), so there was this family, i think as large as 10 of them, decided to EACH put their goodie bags on the seats in front of them (so 20 seats taken up by this big fat as family).. Wondering why they did that? Well, as typical Singaporeans, they decided to use the goodie bags to 'chop' seats for their other friends or families i do not know.. 'Chop' means to reserve in Singapore terms.. I was really disgusted at the act of these Singaporeans, but as a Singaporean, i KNOW that is the culture and norm here, so i just took a photo and walked away... But behind me were a family of westerners, 4 of them frantically looking for a seat to enjoy the opening ceremony, but was turned down as these KIASU SINGAPOREANS decided to happily use the bags to RESERVE the seats..
The opening ceremony was AWESOME!! The performances reflected the journey Singapore has been through since the past, moving on to the future, bring a multi-racial country where we willingly accept the cultures of the other races and religions.. It was truly creative and meaningful, however there is just one single bit that i did not like, and that was out national anthem..
I feel that we did not need to change the tune of our national anthem.. Our 'Majulah Singapura' has a very vibrant and strong tune to it, reflecting the meaning of the anthem, Onward Singapore... Yesterday, it sounded like we were trying to change the anthem to suit a high class 'feel' to it.. I feel that there was no need to compromise our national anthem, after all, this is OUR spirit, OUR pride, OUR song... It is something that represents us, which should not be changed... But oh wells, this is just my personal opinion.. So yeah..
OH! Then the amount of TRASH that was lying on the ground was GROSS!!! I mean, is it so FREAKING hard to clear your own trash?! I just don't get it! How would you like to have your house being filled with trash this way? Like a landfill! PISSED!
Anyway, overall i think Ivan Heng has done a SPECTACULAR job!! Of course the credit is not only his, but also to all the volunteers, workers, Olympic Committee and participants! I am satisfied with yesterday's performance, and i am looking forward to the closing ceremony!!! Well done Singapore, now we need to continue to cheer on the many young athletes that are in Singapore.. In the name of good sportsmanship, it is not the winning, it is the experience that counts.. Although victory is sweet! =)
